Fillet Weld Formula. Notes:

  1. Text book uses default Factor of Safety = 3. This is arbitrary, and codes could specify a higher or lower figure. Book uses electrode strength rating of 410 MPa, so Allowable Stress = 410/3 = 136MPa.
  2. Welds are often (usually) in shear stress, but we assume the same regardless of loading in shear or tension.
  3. The 0.707 factor comes from the 45o triangle. This is same for all fillet welds (assume 45o).
